Major Project - Brands Hatch Poster Photoshoot & Pick-Up Shots
Getting Started With Our Poster & Pick-Up Shots
Today we spent some time at Brands Hatch as a team for a number of reasons; we know that we are required to design a professional looking poster for our major project documentary 'DreamChaser' and given my experience in creating posters in the past for various different projects both at UCA and before-hand, we decided that it'd be a good idea for me to handle this responsibility. We were also fortunate enough to have the Ford Puma out on track during the time that we were there today so we were able to get various pick-up shots that we knew we were missing from the previous Ford GT Puma track day that Alex experienced courtesy of Rod Birley.
After a group discussion regarding what we wanted to do in terms of poster design, we decided to use a picture of Alex in the pitlanes at Brands Hatch, given that Brands is the location of his race in April. We felt that it would incorporate a lot of the elements of the documentary by having Alex central in frame, the iconography of Brands Hatch in the background and a focus on the colour of Alex's visor. While George surveyed portions of the track for areas in which we could get shots from, myself and Alex headed down towards the pitlanes in order to pick-up a couple of shots we missed from the Formula Ford track day a couple of weeks ago. These shots included one of Alex picking his helmet up out of the bag that it's stored in, followed by a shot of Alex C.O.F. (Center of Frame) walking down the Brands Hatch pitlane in his racing suit.
After these shots were acquired we both headed towards the front of the pitlanes where vehicles exit the pits and enter the track before turning right down 'paddock hill'. We felt that this would be the best location for the photo to be taken given that we had the raceway in the background of the shot, distinctive red-barrier running along the pits, as well as the Brands Hatch sign and Start/Stop lights in vision. You can see the image we settled on the displayed here, along with a landscape version of a similar shot:
After spending time at the front-end of the track, both me & Alex went back up towards the car and met George, at which point we headed round towards the far end of the track, just past Druid's Bend. There's a bridge here that allows people to cross over the track into the middle island section of the circuit. We wanted to scout this area to see what sort of locations could be appropriate to place camera operators during future shoot days. We actually discovered several great looking shots in this area including one panning down from the sky with a tree C.O.F. and a view of the straight towards 'Graham Hill Bend', as well as a shot down to the right towards 'paddock hill' which creates a great looking W.S. of that section of track.
With the Puma going around the track we were able to get several shots with better lighting and framing at certain sections of the circuit than our operators had during the original Puma track day. This alone made the day worth-it, however being able to now work on the poster design has me beyond excited.
