As Live Production - Focus, Framing & Vision Mixing Masterclasses

Our First Masterclasses with Del

Today's session was split into two distinct segments, with the first consisting of a pair of masterclasses taught by Del in Studio 2, followed by an afternoon dedicated to formulating our ideas and plans for our individual/group work further as well as meeting with Helen and discussing our progress as a team up until this point.

The morning was by far and away the most enjoyable part of the day; we were able to get hands on with the cameras during the first section and spent the time practicing being able to track targets while simultaneously maintaining consistent framing and pin-sharp focus. This was harder than expected, similarly when being asked to transition from an extreme close up to a long shot as fast and efficiently as possible, we got a sense of the pressure that one could feel during transmission day, as well as how the nature of the entire production process changes when dealing with a live environment, as opposed to filming non-live projects in the past.

The second half of the morning session was spent entirely within the studio gallery. I found this half of the masterclass to be the most engaging personally as I particularly enjoyed being able to go hands on with the Sony vision-mixing desk (pictured right). As part of this session Del had each of us sit at the desk one by one and attempt to follow his directorial instructions as best we could. Believe it or not I did particularly well during this part and managed to carry out all instructions without any errors, so much so that Del decided to throw a curve-ball my way and ask me to perform a wipe transition rather than a mix. Since I was watching Del's actions closely, I was able to smoothly carry out this direction and seemed to pick up a few brownie points!

The Afternoon Session

During this time I got together with fellow promo team members, Will and Ollie, in order to evaluate our current situation and discuss where to go from here. We have already thrown around various ideas for our 30 second promo, consisting of a 'bruce almighty-esque' clothing change involving a high street mannequin, followed by the actor stealing the mannequin for comedic effect. We believe that this will work well with the Channel 4 theme we're aiming for.

Halfway through the afternoon the promo team was called into Helen's office in which we held a brief production meeting, discussing our progress and plans moving forward. Me and Katie Prentis will be cutting the promo together due to our post-production talents displayed in our previous units, while I liaise with Danny in order to put together the social media for 'Steal The Style'. Overall I'd say this day has been rather productive and I've enjoyed being able to get both hands on with new equipment as well as work on our current tasks for the project moving forward, helping ascertain a goal to work towards throughout the study week next week.
