Major Project - Pick Up Day & Fitness Montage Shoot
Picking Up Miscellaneous Footage & Filming A Fitness Montage
We knew all throughout production on 'DreamChaser' that it would be a good idea to designate at least one day dedicated to pick-up shots and other miscellaneous B-roll that we may be lacking by that point. That's why we agreed that today would be a day focused on getting everything we needed to get for the remaining sequences, and anything else that would help round out existing sequences and make them the best they can be. We were originally planning on spending the afternoon back over at 'The Strength And Conditioning Institute' once again, that being the gym we shot the first part of the fitness sequence in several weeks ago, however we were regretfully informed that the gym itself was being closed down permanently, obviously to our great surprise. Fortunately George as producer was able to reach out to another local gym in the Paddock Wood area on short notice, who allowed us to use their facilities for our fitness montage that we wanted to shoot.
Before getting the fitness montage though we spent the morning scouring Alex's area for some kind of clear road-way that would be appropriate for drone filming. This was because we wanted to get footage of Alex cycling in his local area for use during the stings that bridge certain sequences together, and Alex seemed to think he knew some back-roads that are hardly used, that would be safe to fly a drone around. Initially myself and George went to the area that Alex suggested and began looking around for applicable filming locations whilst Alex got changed into his cycling gear and rode out to meet us with his bike. We spent approximately an hour surveying the area and came up with a couple of potential locations, however upon Alex's arrival we decided to settle on one the larger back roads that we hadn't seen yet but Alex recommended as very few people drive through it in general. At this point we set up the drone and spent a further hour or so capturing drone footage of Alex cycling through these roads. We wanted to ensure we got a variety of different looking shots so we experimented with W.S. (Wide Shots), M.S. (Mid-Shots) and Tracking Shots. The DJI MavicPro drone has a built in tracking feature where it attempts to lock on to a moving element in frame and follow it for as long as you require it to, this seemed helpful given how narrow certain portions of the pathway were and enabled us to achieve some great looking aerial footage.
Once these shots were taken care of Alex went home to get changed into his fitness gear, whilst me and George made our way to the new gym facility to shoot the fitness montage. This montage was a result of the feedback we'd received from Simon & Beth in our last meeting and will act as a method of shortening up the entire fitness sequence within the documentary. After introducing ourselves we were taken up towards the gym area and left to our own devices, at which point we began rigging equipment. We were shooting primarily with the Lumix G7 however we decided to also mount the Sony AX53 to a set of mobile wheels so that we could attempt to get some smooth panning and tracking shots of Alex working out on various pieces of equipment. A slow approaching shot from behind Alex on a treadmill for example, was reminiscent of the track & dolly shot we had Connor perform during the sequence at Brands Hatch with Alex's father. While me and George would take turns in operating the mobile Sony rig, I was going around with the Lumix G7 getting as much material as I could of Alex working out on the various machines - this included the rowing machine, exercise bike, treadmill, dumbbell weights, leg extensions and the lateral pull-down machine.
After leaving the gym we headed back to Alex's house to digitize our footage from the day and debrief, the day went well and we were able to get a lot of additional material that'll allow us to fill in several holes that currently exist within the full 'DreamChaser' timeline, thus putting us in a much more cohesive position when it comes to what we have to present at the Fine Cut group screening at the end of this month.
