Pre-Production Unit | Idea Composition - The Witcher Series

Idea Profile - The Witcher TV Series

The opening unit of the third year on the course consists of a pre-production portfolio on either a hypothetical series, or your own major project to be completed after Christmas, for this unit I have decided to complete the hypothetical pre-production, given that it will allow me to pursue something slightly more creative given that I will be working on Alex and George's major project.

One of the potential ideas I had in mind for an adaptation series would be The Witcher, an incredibly popular series of video games developed by Polish studio 'CD Projekt Red'.  Previously inspired by existing novels from author Andrzej Sepkowski, the franchise had already made the jump from one medium to another, and I want to attempt to do that once again with video games > Television.

Broadcasting & Synopsis

As for the company I'd be looking to develop the series with, I'd like a platform with less restrictions in terms of what content can and cannot be shown. HBO or FX for example would be a good choice given the dark and gritty tone of the world both the books and the video games portray.

The Witcher is set in the 16th century, however the world was contaminated with magic during a cataclysmic event that caused magical energy to leak spread throughout the land - often affecting both the wildlife and people alike, an already brutal world became even more lethal with the addition of sorcerers. Leading to the formation of 'The Witcher Guild' - an elite group of people who undergo extensive physical anguish and torture through exposure to toxic magical chemicals over time, thus making them immune to many of their potency as well as having the side-effects of removing most emotional attachment and turning their eyes distinctly 'cat-like'.

These 'witchers' roam No Man's Land, carrying out contracts for coin. Townsfolk are often vulnerable to dangerous wildlife, therefore Witchers essentially act as bounty hunters, however the show will consist of the same political undertones that the books and games portray in order to ensure the adaptation is as accurate as possible.

Casting

Geralt of Rivia/Nikolaj-Coster Waldau:

Geralt is the main character of the series, he is a Witcher trained in the guild of Kaer Morhen up in the mountains overlooking the province of Velen. He is an incredibly talented swordsman and trained slayer of beasts, both the animal and human kind. He is notoriously dead-pan due to his muted characteristics (as a result of his trial of the witcher), however he contrasts it with a unique and dry sense of humor that many fans have come to look for from the series.

When he was slightly younger he was kidnapped by a powerful sorcerer while with his partner Yennefer. As a result of this, he lost a large portion of his memory relating to his life prior to that point and spends a large amount of time simply trying to ascertain what happened to him and find the man who he used to be. This also inevitably creates inordinate tension between him and Yennefer when he eventually finds her once again.

In terms of who I think should portray Geralt in a live-action series, I've always liked the idea of Nikolaj-Coster Waldau taking on the reigns given not just his likeness for the role, but also his clear knowledge of the genre and acting ability shown in his portrayal of Jaime Lannister in the HBO series 'Game of Thrones'.

Yennefer of Vengerberg/Eva Green:

Yennefer (often abbreviated to just 'Yen') is a powerful sorceress, as well as Geralt's most faithful. She's known for being particularly sarcastic at the best of times, but always pushed Geralt to be at his best, even if she does drag him through hell several times a week, sometimes literally. She's charismatic, confident and incredibly smart, though she's certainly not flawless - with many bodies lying in her wake to getting whatever it is she desires at the time.

Yennefer was missing for a large period of time following the loss of Geralt's memory, and it took him several years to find her again, encountering many a challenge along the way, however it was worth it in the eyes of Geralt, someone who frequently finds himself fawning after her in any way he can.

In terms of who I think should portray Yen, I and many others would love to see Eva Green take on the role. She looks almost identical to the video game version of the character and fans often remark on this, however she also possessed the acting talent for the job with prominent roles within films such as Casino Royale and Miss Perigrine's Home for Peculiar Children, as well as leading the TV series 'Penny Dreadful' for 3 years.
