Directions Unit | Steve Finn - Directing Workshops
During the opening few weeks of the term, Steve Finn came in as a visiting lecturer. His goal was to educate us all on different aspects of directing, including adaptation from a screenplay, being able to correctly interpret a text into visual media as well as framing shots correctly.
Steve has a long history within the television directing industry, having directed over 150 episodes of 'Eastenders' and multiple episodes of both 'Holby City' and 'The Bill'. I've found his lectures particularly insightful as it was the first case of 'real-world' directorial experience.
This is where having access to the Maidstone Studio's facilities is particularly useful, as with that we also gain access to a wide variety of equipment and space within a controlled environment. Thus helping make sure we're getting the best experience out of these lectures as possible.
In one of the lectures we picked apart an excerpt from a script, trying to infer as much as we could about the characters from the mere 8 lines we had in-front of us. This was informative to me as it gave me an insight into the depth that some scripts contain - and the importance of the director's understanding of said script elements.
One of the other activities that Steve gave us was the studying and adaptation of a script that would require us to go away, retrieve any props that are required if we deem necessary, and attempt to shoot at-least aspects of that scene during one of the later sessions. This was interesting as it gave us an opportunity to get a feel for the work that we would be doing for our production, a mere 2-3 weeks later.
