Pre-Production Unit Research - Location Hunting For Opening Sequence

What Sort Of Look Am I Going For?

I want to be able to symbolise the barren wasteland of No Man's Land. The show's title refers to the area in which the show takes place, a county within the wider kingdom of Velen within The Witcher universe. As inferred by it's name, the area is populated by small villages which have their own isolated communities, spread out across a massive expanse of field and forest terrain.

As a way to represent this and accurately portray the type of theme that the world evokes in all of its source material, I will be shooting on-location in nearby remote areas such as unkempt fields, and villages.

Upper Swell, Gloucestershire - Bridge Area
In an effort to recce some locations that could prove useful during the production of my opening sequence, I've been considering taking a trip to Gloucestershire to visit the village of 'Swell'. After having researched the area it appears to match the depiction of many of the village locations used in the source material, most notably the thatched roofing on many of the buildings. The overgrown look featured in the image to the right is era-appropriate as well given that the show is set in the 15th century; gardening wasn't always as efficient as it is today!

It's worth noting that this picture was taken during the summer, however I think the autumn/winter aesthetic will help solidify the colder, darker tone that No Man's Land encapsulates. For the same reason, when I shoot the field sequences I intend to do so earlier in the morning during the sunrise, this will hopefully ensure I get some great looking shots with the grass being wet and the sun catching the light on the environment.

I also want to be able to film some internal close up shots of exposition-related items such as handwritten, tea-stained notes with blood dripping onto them to symbolise Lyria and Amelia's cutthroat nature. I also had the idea of shooting a girl's eyes up close and altering their colour during post production in order to match the iconic green that is reflected within the witcher lore.
