Major Project - South Downs Area Location Scout
Scouting The South Downs Location
Today we went as a group to scout one of the key locations for shooting our reflective sequence - The South Downs, also known as the seven sisters cliffs. The inspiration to shoot this sombre moment at a location like the cliff-side came from our pre-production analysis of 'Walk The Walk - KSI Vs Joe Weller Documentary' by YouTube content creator True Geordie. During this documentary Brian, aka True Geordie stares off towards a beach as he reflects on the memories he had growing up and how they related to the topic of the documentary - this is something we wanted to emulate within 'DreamChaser'. Instead of choosing a beach however, we opted to stand higher up on the cliffs in order to give a more cinematic look, given what we've seen today there's far more potential to have eye-capturing mise-en-scene in this location, as opposed to going down the cliff-side to the beach area.
As part of our scouting, we walked up towards the east side of the cliff-face, through various shrubbery and remote residential areas, until we reached the long stretch of Seven Sisters. We continued walking for ~1 mile before we came across a location that we felt would fit our scene appropriately. Myself and George knew that we were looking for an area in which Alex could walk and talk with another camera operator tracking him from a 45 degree angle, but also an area in which he could sit down and contemplate the potential results of the upcoming race event. As you can see from the images below, we were able to mark out several great looking locations that could potentially be used for filming when we revisit the South Downs later on this month.
We also had the foresight to bring George's DJI MavicPro drone with us in order to test drone shooting locations along the roads nearing the South Downs. We knew that given the winding layout of the roads in this area, there would be great opportunities for mise-en-scene drone footage of Alex driving his car along the road. This footage won't be incorporated into the south downs sequence specifically, however it can be used in various montages throughout the documentary, for example the introduction, the end of documentary recap and even as establishing shots during sequences where Alex is driving towards different key locations.
Due to the limitations of the drone battery, we didn't get as much time as we wanted to practicing with the drone and unfortunately the wind was strong enough to make flying the drone somewhat troublesome during certain points - something that was good to know ahead of our actual shoot day as it may interfere with our plans to capture drone footage on our shoot day. This is one of many examples of how performing a recce on a location before shooting there can help us come more prepared when we actually shoot material for our documentary. This is a similar approach to what we're taking with the upcoming Donington Park track day sequence, given that neither me or George have ever visited the circuit.
