As Live Production - Pitching Our Idea
The Pitch
Today was pitching day, in which each pair would pitch their idea to the panel of 'judges' for lack of a better term. The panel consisted of Helen Curston, our unit leader. Jo Clark, Del Brown who will be overseeing our studio production as well as holding masterclasses with us over the coming weeks, Joshua Jones, 3rd year student and producer of last year's production, and finally our course leader, Simon Welsford.
After having the opportunity to rehearse our pitch for several hours over the past couple of days, we were able to get much more confident in what we were saying and were able to reduce the time it took to pitch from 15 minutes to exactly 10 minutes. This helped during the pitch itself as we were able to conform to the time limit accurately and didn't run over at all.
I felt that the pitch overall went very well, considering I had some anxiety going into it (part of which I'm sure is naturally attributed to the nature of getting up and presenting something such as this), I found it to be one of the most confident occasions in which I've been required to talk in front of groups of people - that's a personal triumph of mine that I've accomplished through this process.
Feedback was strong overall, everyone expressed an interest in the concept and the potential of such a show on mainstream television and Del even spoke specifically to the professionalism in which the idea was pitched, so I was happy to hear such positive feedback. As far as criticisms go, I think one of the key things was our enthusiasm, as Del and Simon did express that they got the facts and understood the idea, but there could've been more of a sense of passion from the two of us. Some may regard it as harsh criticism, however I found it to be wholly constructive. This isn't the first time I've been criticised for lacking enthusiasm towards things, however I think that's more of a case of my external persona suppressing the true emotions I'm inherently feeling or experiencing at any given time.
I thoroughly enjoyed working with Alex throughout the conceptualisation of this idea and I'd certainly be interested in working with him on other projects further down the line. I do think he was perhaps a bit more disheartened than I was when it came to not getting the producer role everyone sought after, which is of course a shame. However, both me and George N have attempted to encourage optimism following what I felt was a rather successful pitch.
As for the future of this project, Katie J and Melissa were chosen as the idea the panel were most interested in commissioning, therefore confirming our project for the next 3 months. 'Steal The Style' - We'll be learning more about the concept and execution of the production during our first production meeting Friday afternoon. I'm looking forward to working with Katie and Melissa to put together something really special!
