As Live Production - Our First Rehearsal Session

Rehearsing The Show

As with any live production in the industry, rehearsals are crucial to ensure the smooth running of the program, and allow contributors to iron out the show during this process. Since this was our first opportunity to get to grips with the working environment, we took slightly longer to set everything up than normal, however once the cameras were rigged up to the gallery and our stand-ins were in place, we began to test the waters with our script.

Today was also an opportunity to get used to working with IEM (In-Ear Monitoring) gear that establishes communication between crew on the show floor and the gallery. This is particularly relevant to me as the director will be giving us orders throughout the show, whether they be shot types, adjusting framing or even focus, though the latter is generally my responsibility as a camera operator. We also had the rochester students come in during the rehearsal in order to appraise the set design. Del informed us that there were some interesting discussions being had between him and the lead lecturer who accompanied said students, noting that he came up with some unique ideas that could end up enhancing the end design all the more!

As for my role in the production, I'm one of the 9 camera operators during the show. We have 5 cameras available to us (one JVC camera and 4 Sony EX cameras). The JVC camera will be operated by Laura Dagga for the duration of the show, adhering to her role of Lead Camera Operator, with the other 4 cameras having 2 different operators for either side of the show. Though it is worth noting that we are all working in the mindset that we must be able to handle the entire show as in the event of sickness on transmission day, a camera operator would be expected to cover the other half of the show as well.

Overall I'd say today was productive to say the least, it was a learning experience for everybody involved while also serving as a bonding experience considering this was the first time we were all working together to achieve one big goal. I can definitely understand the appeal of working in live television given the communal satisfaction and sense of achievement that an experience like this provides.

I was also able to grab raw photos from a photoshoot conducted by some of the other promo team members today, which will allow me to begin drafting further concepts for our posters moving forward. These will also allow Katie P to implement them into her current website design for Steal the Style. As of right now, I'm liking where the project is going, and considering I was rather intimidated by the unit looming over us during the first term, my anxieties have been calmed somewhat by the continued dedication and support shown by everyone involved. Exciting few weeks ahead!
