Transition Unit - Expanding My After Effects Skillset

After Effects Knowledge

Going into this project I knew that after effects was going to be the core component to the fluidity of the piece, and I ultimately wanted to challenge myself in a new and unique way. Given that I had no prior experience working with the software, this was initially quite the undertaking, however I quickly began to warm up to the program and begin to utilise it to a fuller potential.

In addition to the lower third (name/role card) featured in the previous blog post, I have also created and animated several other sequences for use within the documentary. This includes a lower third for crediting external footage, an animated background including a white border that surrounds the clip being shown, a watermark featured in the bottom left of the screen for the majority of the documentary (a nod to Vox's use of the same technique), and finally a fully handmade, animated title sequence - in which the word 'Facebook' opens up to reveal the subtitle of the documentary 'Securing' Your Data.

I also created several sequences in which the camera follows web-pages and various online articles in order to highlight important or relevant information. In order to create this effect (pictured right), I recorded the footage using a screen-recording software known as 'Shadowplay', brought the clips into After Effects scaling and rotating them as needed, followed by applying and adjusting a vignette effect to the screen. I also added a minor sharpening effect in order to clean the image up somewhat, due to it being 1440p footage upscaled to a 4K resolution.

Watermark visible in the bottom-left of the screen.
