25 Word Pitch | Isolation | Basic Structure
'The Meeting' - 'Isolation' - A teenager battles severe social anxiety as they make their journey to their new interview, will they overcome it or buckle as they reach their goal? (25 words)
Genre: Thriller, Drama, Social Realism
Characters:
Shaun: 19, struggles in social situations, anxiety affects every aspect of his life and has crippled many of his opportunities in the past, but today could be the day where Shaun takes a huge step towards conquering his fear and stepping out of his comfort zone, permanently.
Shaun has acquired an internship interview with a marketing company in the heart of London.
Kerri: 26, Calm, confident business executive, Kerri is conducting Shaun's interview and is ready for him to show her what he is capable of. Kerri runs a marketing company in the centre of London and has achieved many awards in the past for her companies work on various mainstream projects.
Locations:
Shaun's Home: A small, claustrophobic household, emphasises the narrow tunnel vision perspective that Shaun adopts into his personality.
Train: Shows the travel between home and London, Shaun experiences severe anxiety symptoms that affect his ability to think clearly.
London Victoria Train Station: Crowds are very prominent within the train station and help to emphasise the claustrophobia and fear that Shaun experiences, I really want to ensure the audience understands how big of a step emotionally this process is for him.
Office Building (Maidstone TV Studios, UCA Baseroom): This is where the interview is going to take place, everything leads up to this moment for Shaun, culminating in a daunting experience. I chose to utilise the environment available to me at the studios as it looks both professional and unique, while maintaining the business-esque look I have in mind.
The Source Material:
I essentially am basing this off of my own experiences with social anxiety, in no way am I claiming that I have experienced as severe social anxiety as the character Shaun does, however I am telling this story from the perspective of someone who experiences similar feelings as I do. Making the jump from travelling 10 minutes to sixth form college, to 2 hours+ to University was a similar experience, that I am still grappling with to this day.
Due to my daily commute, I pass through both the train and Victoria Station scenarios very regularly, therefore this is does not require me to go out of my way in order to shoot parts for my film. Providing of course I attain the respectable permission from Southern-rail.
Essentially:
This is the story of someone who battles social anxiety, while the ultimate end point of the short film is getting to the interview and taking part in said interview, the core focus of said film is the way in which Shaun deals with the social anxiety he faces day in and day out. That is essentially what I want to portray cinematically, and I think showing that through the genre of film is going to be an interesting challenge for myself.

Hi Cailan -
ReplyDeleteThe pitch is clear, with a good sense of character and place. As a quick point it will be highly unlikely you would get permission to film in Victoria station without incurring a large fee!.
In terms of a setting up/starting a story - this is a strong idea. But in terms of developing it into a story there are questions. What is the actual story? Where do we get to? What is the change? Him being able to just get to interview isn't a story in itself. You need to think about a twist or some dramatic irony. What happens at the meeting that could be related to his situation or condition? happy to chat more when i see you.
