Transition Unit - Compiling Our Pitch (Includes Slides)
Skype Session in Advance of Concept Pitch
Today me and Alex got together over Skype in order to discuss the direction of our current transition unit concept, then formulating it into a presentation to be used throughout our pitch at 14:40 on Wednesday afternoon.
We are rolling with the topic of data privacy and protection, more specifically in relation to the recent Facebook scandal where approximately 80 million users' personal information was revealed to be sent to external data collection company, Cambridge Analytica, where in which it was used as part of a technique known as 'Psychoanalytic Profiling'. This enabled the company to build up a profile of the things you liked, disliked and general information about you, which they would then use to target specially designed advertisements towards you (through Facebook), thus having a marked effect on the outcome of numerous international political events. Most notably, the 2016 US election.
We believe that the sinister nature of the story strikes at the very heart of what journalism means traditionally. Evaluating the situation and getting to the truth of something that is no doubt deceptive, manipulative and overreaching in nature. We settled on having a presenter lead mini-documentary showcasing the current situation and attempting to educate people on how to be more protective of your online data, and by extension, the very real world dangers that exist today when it comes to trading your own privacy for the sake of convenience.
I have attached all the slides from the presentation in it's current state and am currently planning to incorporate a short 1:30-2:00 clip featuring the signature aesthetic style that I'm going to be attempting as part of my chosen role of 'Editor':
